@XMR What is Monero's tail emission, and how is it different from a hard cap?

A reward of 0.6 XMR or less per block, forever, with no hard cap. Source: Monero Moneropedia, Tail emission.

Tail emission began at the end of May 2022, when the declining block reward hit that floor and stopped falling. Source: Monero Moneropedia, Tail emission.

It exists so miners still get paid when fees alone might not cover securing the chain. With Monero’s dynamic block size, miner competition tends to push fees down, so a permanent floor reward keeps an incentive to mine. Same source.
